Ernst Kirsten Society. International Society for Historical Geography of the Ancient World
The "Ernst Kirsten Society. International Society for Historical Geography of the Ancient World" was founded in 1989 to create a permanent organizational basis for the discipline of ancient geography. The main purpose of the society is to provide all members and the scientific public with comprehensive information on events and progress in the field of historical geography of the ancient world. The society was founded on the initiative of Prof. Dr. Eckart Olshausen in Stuttgart. He was also its long-standing chairperson (honorary member since 2011). Prof. Dr. Michael Rathmann has been managing the association’s business in Eichstätt as 1st chairperson since July 2014. The society was named after the important historical geographer, Prof. Dr. Ernst Kirsten.
Journal ‘Orbis Terrarum’
The association’s publication organ is the journal "Orbis Terrarum: International Journal of Historical Geography of the Ancient World", which is published by Franz Steiner Verlag in Stuttgart and contains various academic articles as well as literature reports on the historical geography of the ancient world. You can purchase the journal as a single volume for €112 each, as a subscription for €101.40 each and as a member of the EKG for the special price of €89.60 each.
Travel grant
On the basis of a donation made by Mrs. Kirsten-Noé and her brothers, the association awards the following travel grants annually, which are awarded to young academics working in the field of ancient geography (Bachelor's, Master's, Magister and examination theses, dissertations, etc.).
Ernst Kirsten Conference
The society organizes scientific conferences on key topics of ancient geography at regular intervals. The last conference was held from September 29 to October 01, 2021, in Eichstätt and was dedicated to the topic "Coast(s) in Antiquity".
Membership
The society has more than 130 members from all over the world. This makes it one of the largest international scientific associations of historical geography. The membership fee is EUR 35 per year. Pupils and students pay a reduced membership fee of EUR 15.
