With the topic "Environment and Climate Change", Erasmus also aims to raise awareness among grantees and institutions relating to climate change and environmental protection, and regarding the ecological footprint that participants create during their mobility programs.
Green travel refers to travel that uses low-emission modes of transportation such as bus, rail, or carpooling for the majority of the trip .
There is no detailed list of possible means of transportation in the Erasmus+ program. Thus, travel by ship is also considered "green travel" if the location can otherwise only be reached by air (e.g. Ireland, Iceland, etc.).
The following modes of transportation are considered sustainable by the German Academic Exchange Service:
Up to a total of 6 travel days are subsidized for green travel. A maximum of 2 travel days are funded for non-green travel. This applies both to internships in Erasmus+ program countries and to internships in Erasmus+ partner countries.

General information
In addition to your Erasmus+ funding, you may be able to apply for a top-up for participants with fewer opportunities. The top-up amounts to 250.00 euros per month.
Please note: The top-ups for participants with fewer opportunities cannot be combined with each other. This means that even if you fulfill several of the following conditions, you can apply for a maximum grant of 250.00 euros.
Top-up for first-time graduates
Students can apply for this top-up if none of their parents or guardians has an academic degree (FH or university). A master craftsman's certificate is NOT counted as an academic degree in this context. However, courses of study completed abroad by a parent or legal guardian that are not recognized as such in Germany (e.g. physiotherapy) are counted as academic qualifications. In the case of single parents, this regulation only applies to the parent with whom the child lives.
Proof: Honorary declaration from your legal guardian or custodian (for single parents: the parent).
Top-up for working students
Students who have been continuously employed for at least six months prior to the start of their internship abroad and who are unable to continue this employment during their stay abroad are entitled to apply for this top-up. The following applies:
Please note: Students who are self-employed and dual/part-time students with a fixed salary are unfortunately excluded from applying (the DAAD is currently discussing an amendment to this regulation).
Proof: payslip or tax certificate/tax return.
Top-up for students with child(ren)
Students who are traveling abroad for an internship with their child/children can apply for this top-up. The amount is independent of the number of children. When applying for this top-up, you undertake to submit proof that the child belongs to you and will be traveling with you. The additional funds can also be granted for couples. However, double funding for one child is excluded.
Note: Students with child(ren) can alternatively submit an application for real costs. In this case, the real costs must be fully documented. If you wish to apply for real costs, please contact the International Office of the KU at least three months before the start of the mobility.
Proof: Copy of the child's birth certificate and travel ticket.
Top-up for students with a severe disability or chronic illness
Students with a severe disability and students with a chronic illness which is associated with additional financial needs abroad can apply for this top-up. When applying for this top-up, you undertake to submit proof of your disability or chronic illness (e.g. confirming medical certificate or disability card). In the case of a chronic illness, the medical certificate must state that you will incur additional financial expenses abroad as a result.
Note: Students with a severe disability or chronic illness can alternatively apply for real costs. In this case, the real costs must be fully documented with receipts. If you wish to apply for real costs, please contact the International Office of the KU at least three months before the start of your mobility.

For the further process regarding the form of academic recognition (required internship=ECTS, voluntary internship= entry in the Diploma Supplement) you want to receive for the Erasmus+ internship, please contact the board of examiners of your degree program. After the Learning Agreement for Traineeships has been returned by the internship institution, also have it signed by the chairperson of the board of examiners in your degree program who will give academic credit for the internship. An overview of the examination boards can be found here (please note: the website is in German and the link is named 'Übersichtsliste der Prüfungsausschüsse'). Important: Voluntary internships do not need to be signed by the examination office.
