Roles

Liane Rothenberger has been Professor of Media and Public Spheres with a Focus on Migration at the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt since September 2021.

The Professorship for Media and the Public Sphere with a Focus on Migration examines the role of the media in the field of tension between (media) communication, the public sphere and migration. The professorship is intended to strengthen interdisciplinary research on flight and migration in the Faculty of Linguistics and Literature. In addition to its work on the Journalism Studies course, it cooperates with the Center for Flight and Migration. The professorship is involved in teaching on the Bachelor's and Master's degree courses in Journalism Studies as well as the Master's degree course “Flight, Migration, Society”.

The endowed professorship was established with funds from the ZFM and donations from companies and private individuals in the region.

The aim of the professorship is to open up new fields of research in the area of media, the public sphere and migration. These include the digital transformation of public spheres and the thematization of migration issues taking place there, the representation of flight and migration in public communication and the production and use of media by refugees.
The research project “Refugee Women in the Media”, for example, investigated the media representation of refugee women between 2011 and 2021 as part of a longitudinal study. Another research project examined Arab and Ukrainian refugee families and their media repertoires. A current project involves collaboration with local building yards and their employees, some of whom are migrants.
