Antiquityplus offers a study of the Greco-Roman world in all its facets: The program takes an intensive look at material evidence, the history and literature of Greece and Rome from a cultural studies perspective. The "plus" in the name refers to a broad and flexible required elective area that can be used either to deepen and specialize knowledge of classical studies or for practice-oriented professional preparation.
The BA profile in AntiquityPlus allows students to comprehensively research Greek and Roman antiquity from the perspectives of Ancient History, Classical Archaeology and Classical Philology (Latin and Greek). These disciplines focus on the study of the people, societies and cultures of antiquity as they are presented in texts and archaeological evidence. After all, in order to understand today's society, politics, religion and culture, you have to know the past. The study of antiquity offers valuable insights into current processes of social and cultural change.
The BA profile in Antiquityplus is unique in Germany and combines historical knowledge with questions of modern times.
The profile’s 180 ECTS credits are divided between modules from three subject areas, a flexible required elective area and special individual achievements.
In the required area (120 ECTS credits), students take modules worth 40 ECTS credits per subject in the three ancient studies sub-disciplines (Ancient History, Classical Archaeology and Classical Philology). In the first semester, introductory modules provide basic knowledge of the content, history and methods of ancient studies and its individual disciplines as well as a sound introduction to academic work and presentation skills. From the second year onwards, students acquire in-depth knowledge in the individual fields of ancient studies.
The broad and flexible required elective area (40 ECTS credits) gives students the opportunity to expand their knowledge and skills either in other subjects or in the fields of ancient studies. Options are available in the following areas:
It is possible and explicitly encouraged to use the required elective area for a specialization in one of the three subjects of ancient studies. Students can complete up to 60 ECTS credits in one of the subjects and thus meet the requirements for a subject-specific Master's degree in Classical Archaeology, Ancient History or Classical Philology.
Students must complete at least one internship related to the subjects from the required elective area. This is intended to give students a perspective on possible professional fields. In addition, students are free to complete further internships within the 40 ECTS credits to be earned.
The interdisciplinary nature of the degree program becomes particularly evident through integration of a module from the Studium.Pro area (5 ECTS credits), an interdisciplinary colloquium (5 ECTS credits) and the preparation of a Bachelor's thesis (10 ECTS credits), in which students are encouraged to apply the working methods of all three sub-disciplines.
KU students and alumni have voted for their University to be Germany's most popular university in the 2024 ranking of the online portal StudyCheck. This is the third time in a row, as KU was also voted the most popular university in 2021 and 2022. The ranking was based on over 78,000 evaluations for more than 500 higher education institutions and universities. 97 percent of students questioned for the ranking would recommend studying at the KU to others.
"There is no better praise for a university than almost 100 percent of students and alumni agreeing: I can only recommend studying at the KU! That is why we are very pleased with the ranking’s outcome, because it expresses the high level of satisfaction of our students," says KU President Prof. Dr. Gabriele Gien.
The Ancient Studies department at the KU maintains numerous partnerships with institutes and facilities at European universities. This gives students good opportunities to spend a semester abroad, to complete an internship at an institution that has a relation to ancient studies or to participate in a summer school.
If you would like to study abroad for a semester and broaden your personal horizons, you can organize your stay with one of the universities with which the University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt has established an Erasmus partnership. The Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona or Universidad de Murcia in Spain, the Università degli Studi di Roma 'La Sapienza' in Italy, the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in Greece or the University of Southern Denmark are just a few examples of the wide range of partner universities. This is just a small selection of a worldwide network of Erasmus partnerships. The KU International Office supports students in the planning phase and provides information on different financing possibilities for stays abroad.
Beyond this classical path, the lecturers in the Antiquityplus profile are also happy to help arrange a semester abroad or internship for students with personal contacts.
The specific career preparation offered by the course also includes at least one internship that provides an insight into a possible professional field. When arranging an internship, students are supported by an external network of experts, consisting of classical and non-classical scholars in professional fields to which the BA leads (e.g. museums, publishing houses, newspapers). In addition, students are free to complete further internships within the 40 ECTS credits to be earned in the required elective area.
Following completion of the Antiquityplus program, students can decide to pursue a Master's degree in either a general ancient studies program or a subject-specific Master's in Classical Archaeology, Ancient History or Classical Philology. The interdisciplinary orientation of the course also ideally prepares students for a doctorate in ancient studies.
The practice-oriented course also prepares students for careers in other research institutions or monuments offices. Further internships such as voluntary practical work (Volontariat) pave the way to museums, exhibitions or archives. Graduates can also pursue careers in the fields of publishing and journalism, press and public relations, business and politics, publishing and editing, media design, cultural management, tourism, public administration, associations and foundations as well as in educational institutions.

I particularly like the Antiquityplus profile, for example because of the option to include journalism modules – after all, academic writing and publishing are part of an archaeologist's professional life. Furthermore, I find integrated Latin courses that can be credited to modules much more motivating in view of the amount of work involved. The degree program offers a new range of subjects and thus allows a targeted focus on different aspects of the profession.

When I first heard about the idea of a combined degree course in Classical Philology, Classical Archaeology and Ancient History, I was thrilled. Antiquityplus enables an all-encompassing study of antiquity from several perspectives, as each subject contributes its own approaches and methods. I think this is particularly good for a Bachelor’s degree program, as it lays the foundations on which you can later build when specializing in the subsequent Master’s degree program.

I also studied the three disciplines involved in the Antiquityᵖˡᵘˢ profile at the KU and can only recommend it, not only because I found a niche in which there is virtually no competition: You study the subject and understand antiquity in its entirety. As I work as a self-employed project manager and editor in the private sector, I also feel that looking beyond your horizons in the required elective area is the best way to gain advantages for your future career.
After more than eight years in permanent employment with renowned publishing houses (including Reclam), I have now been self-employed for eight years. I edit textbooks, non-fiction books, guidebooks, bilingual editions (Latin-German) and much more, but my publishing experience is also broad enough to work on other non-fiction topics. As a substitute for publishing experience, insights into journalism studies, as are now possible in the new program profile, would have been an important kick-start for me.

Merging the three subjects – Classical Archaeology, Ancient History and Classical Philology – to form the profile in Antiquityᵖˡᵘˢ makes sense both in terms of content and for interdisciplinary issues; it thus allows a comprehensive understanding of antiquity. A joint degree program also makes it much easier to study ancient studies because the courses are coordinated. In my opinion, the variety and interdisciplinarity of the degree program opens up an expanded professional field, especially internationally (and in particular in the UK and the USA).

I completed my studies and doctorate mainly in Eichstätt: Classical Archaeology and Ancient History as well as Bavarian Regional History. In my day-to-day work as museum director of the LIMESEUM at the Limes fort in Ruffenhofen, I constantly see how important it is for the three main ancient sciences – archaeology, ancient history and classical philology – to work together. The practical relevance in particular is likely to have a beneficial effect on my future career. I am convinced that the degree program in Antiquityᵖˡᵘˢ will do a lot to help graduates find their place in a job market that is not always easy.
