Do you want to spark children’s and young people’s excitement for mathematics, and teach them the basics of mathematics or impart more complex mathematical skills? Then the mathematics teaching degree program is right for you! At the KU, you can study mathematics as part of the teaching degree for the secondary schools Gymnasium, Realschule, Mittelschule or for elementary schools.

Students studying to become secondary school teachers for Gymnasium with the subject combinations mathematics-economics and mathematics-school psychology can acquire a Bachelor's degree in mathematics (specializing in business mathematics or empirical sciences) parallel to their teacher training.

The program in detail

Study program

At the KU, you have the following options for studying mathematics as part of the teaching degree program:

  • Teaching degree for secondary school Gymnasium with the secondary subjects Catholic religious education, school psychology, Latin, English, economics and German.
  • Teaching degree for secondary school Realschule with mathematics in the subject combinations of Catholic religious education, German, English, school psychology, art education and music.
  • Teaching degree for secondary school Mittelschule with mathematics as a teaching subject.
  • Teaching degree for elementary school with mathematics as a teaching subject.

We hold separate lectures for secondary school Realschule, elementary school and secondary school Mittelschule teachers in the first semesters in order to prepare these students in the best possible way for their state examination. Students on the Gymnasium teaching degree course largely attend the same lectures as those on the Bachelor's degree course.

The teaching degree programs in Eichstätt are modularized, so that the credit points earned during the course are included in the first state examination. An essential part of the first state examination are three written examinations that are held centrally throughout Bavaria.

Rankings and assessments

StudyCheck2024

KU students and alumni have voted for their University to be Germany's most popular university in the 2024 ranking of the online portal StudyCheck. This is the third time in a row, as KU was also voted the most popular university in 2021 and 2022. The ranking was based on over 78,000 evaluations for more than 500 higher education institutions and universities. 97 percent of students questioned for the ranking would recommend studying at the KU to others.

"There is no better praise for a university than almost 100 percent of students and alumni agreeing: I can only recommend studying at the KU! That is why we are very pleased with the ranking’s outcome, because it expresses the high level of satisfaction of our students," says KU President Prof. Dr. Gabriele Gien.
