The study programme

Study programme and -structure

The accredited Master's programme offered in cooperation with the Centre Flight and Migration provides insight into various theoretical and practice-oriented topics. The focus is on social transformation processes as well as interdisciplinary perspectives in flight and migration research. The spatial, economic, socio-cultural and political organisation of social living conditions are dealt with, e.g.

  • economic and socio-cultural realtions and processes
  • entanglement regional and global structures
  • historical-social and social conditions of flight and migration
  • roles and relationships of different actors
  • cultural changes through flight and migration

Different fields of social action - such as family, education, culture, language and religion - are addressed as well as questions of identity and foreignness.

The degree programme Flight, Migration, Society enables graduates to work on the sustainable development of society and thus contributes to the analysis and change of global problems and crises of our age. By linking research, academic in-depth study and practical components, students will not only be comprehensively prepared for later professional activities in the multifaceted and complex field of flight and migration, but will also be sensitised to the relevance of civic engagement in strengthening civil society. The structure of the interdisciplinary Master's programme combines a research-focused foundation and academic specialisation in different disciplines with application-oriented practical references, in order to take into account the broad field of work - in terms of individual research traditions and professional perspectives.

Information on the compulsory internship

How long must the compulsory internship be as part of the Master's degree?

As part of the Master FMG, a compulsory internship must be completed in a field of activity related to the degree programme. The minimum duration of the compulsory internship is 7 weeks (equivalent to 35 working days). Please inform yourself in advance about this in the module description for the internship and with the responsible module supervisor.

Can the internship be completed abroad?

Yes, this is possible in principle. It is also possible to combine an internship abroad with a semester abroad. Please contact the International Internships Service Office for more information and send your questions to: praktika-international(at)ku.de.

Furthermore, the Career Center of KU offers students international company contacts and current offers for internships abroad.

Can the internship (compulsory duration: 7 weeks) be split into several individual internships of shorter duration?

Yes, the internship can be split into several individual internships. However, it is recommended to complete the internship in one piece or in larger blocks in one or max. two institutions in order to get a deeper insight into the respective professional practice.

Can internships completed before the start of the Master's degree programme be recognised?

Yes, internships that were already completed before enrolment in the Master's programme FMG can also be recognised (partially or completely, depending on the individual case). The decisive factor here is the relation of the internship to the field of flight and migration (see module description for the internship), which is checked in advance in each individual case. Therefore, please contact the person responsible for the module in good time regarding recognition. The associated accompanying event for reflection on the practical activity and for exchange with lecturers and students must be completed independently of this.

Where can I get information about internships

KU maintains a multimedia database for job offers. Visit the Career Center of the KU for this. You can also make an appointment with the KU career counselling service. Please contact Nina Savarini at: karriereberatung(at)ku.de

Can professional activity be recognised as a traineeship?

Yes, practical experience gained in the context of a professional activity can also be recognised (partially or fully, depending on the individual case). The decisive factor here is the relation of the internship to the area of flight and migration (see module description for the internship), which is checked in advance in each individual case. Therefore, please contact the person responsible for the module in good time regarding recognition. The associated accompanying event for reflection on the practical activity and for exchange with lecturers and students must be completed independently of this.

How is the completion of the internship confirmed?

The institution where the internship was completed must issue a confirmation of the internship, in which the following should be included:

  • Beginning and end of the internship
  • Tasks/objectives of the internship institution/department
  • Tasks of the trainee
  • Contact person/internship supervisor in the institution

Information about the semester abroad

Can I plan a semester abroad?

Yes, every student is free to spend a semester at a foreign university. It is important to clarify in advance which (partner) universities of the KU and which possibilities there are for crediting study achievements abroad. The 3rd semester is suitable for a stay abroad. The modules in this semester are very flexible and can also be completed after or before the 3rd semester (e.g. Studium Pro Gesellschaft) or abroad (e.g. internship). Please inform yourself at an early stage at the International Office of KU Eichstätt-Ingolstadt.

Can I combine a semester abroad with an internship abroad?

Yes, please contact the International Internships Service Centre and send your questions to: praktika-international(at)ku.de

Will a stay abroad extend the study period?

This depends on whether comparable modules/courses can be completed at the foreign university as in the Master FMG and can thus be credited for the corresponding modules of the Master. However, many modules in the Master FMG can be completed flexibly in other semesters - for example, even before the planned stay abroad - regardless of the ideal typical course of study. Please contact the respective module coordinator and the International Office of the KU Eichstätt-Ingolstadt for more information.

Where can I get more information about the possibilities of a semester abroad?

You can make an appointment at the International Office at KU. There you will receive information on potential partner universities, the credit transfer modalities for academic achievements at foreign universities and funding opportunities. You can find out more on the website of the International Office.

Please contact Stephany Koujou, contact person for outgoing students at the International Office: outgoing(at)ku.de

Information on the elective area

Which modules can I choose for the elective area?

One of the following modules from the compulsory area can be taken again if a different course is taken than in the initial submission:

  •     Historical approaches F, M, G: 5 ECTS credits
  •     Culture and Religion: 5 ECTS credits
  •     Glocal Dynamics: 5 ECTS credits
  •     Media and the public sphere: 5 ECTS credits
  •     Education, upbringing and family: 5 ECTS credits
  •     Mental Health and Social Issues: 5 ECTS credits

When the module is completed for the second time, the module title is given the suffix "(extension/deepening)".

Other comparable modules from the range of courses offered at KU can also be included in the elective area

If I have voluntarily attended more courses than required, can I choose at the end of the degree programme which courses will be credited for the elective module?

If more modules have been taken in the elective area than are necessary, one module can be selected as an elective module. Students must pass this information on to the examination office. Usually, the module with the best grade achieved, which is included in the overall result of the Master's degree, is selected. You are welcome to take more courses than required. They are then all listed in the transcript of records.

What goes into the Master's transcript?

All completed modules in the mandatory and the elective area from the Master's degree programme FMG are included in the Master's certificate. All modules taken and completed are also listed in the Transcript of Records
