Italian at the KU

At the heart of Italian Studies is the scientific study of the Italian language, literature and culture. You will acquire methodical and analytical skills that will enable you to speak and write reflectively about Italian, Italian-language texts and media. Historical, political and social contexts are always taken into account, making you an expert on Italy - a country that not only has an exceptionally rich cultural tradition but is also an important economic partner for Germany.

In the literary and cultural section of the study you will become acquainted with Italian Literature and Culture from the Middle Ages to the present day, i.e. you will deal with authors from Dante Alighieri to Roberto Saviano, but also with Italian-language literature from other cultures. In the linguistic part you will systematically deal with the structure and history of Italian. You have the opportunity to choose between different topics and to set your own priorities, especially in the Bachelor's and Master's Programmes. In the Teacher Training Degree Programme you can also set your own priorities; in addition, the Bavarian State Examination Regulations guarantee that the State Examination, which is the same throughout the entire Federal State, can be taken.

A further essential component of the Degree Programme is the deepening and broadening of the student's own Italian competence. To this end, you can choose from a wide range of practical language courses taught by native Italian speakers.

A special feature of the KU Eichstätt is the possibility to start the Degree Programme of Italian Studies even without previous language skills. During the first semester you will acquire these skills by attending specially offered intensive courses.

Studying for a Teaching Degree in particular adds questions of didactics, i.e. questions of language acquisition and the teaching of language, literature and culture, but intercultural competence is also taught for work outside of school, for example, as is required in commercial enterprises or social institutions.
