Rankings and assessments

StudyCheck2024

KU students and alumni have voted for their University to be Germany's most popular university in the 2024 ranking of the online portal StudyCheck. This is the third time in a row, as KU was also voted the most popular university in 2021 and 2022. The ranking was based on over 78,000 evaluations for more than 500 higher education institutions and universities. 97 percent of students questioned for the ranking would recommend studying at the KU to others.

"There is no better praise for a university than almost 100 percent of students and alumni agreeing: I can only recommend studying at the KU! That is why we are very pleased with the ranking’s outcome, because it expresses the high level of satisfaction of our students," says KU President Prof. Dr. Gabriele Gien.

Studying abroad

The Professorship of Art Education and Didactics of Art has numerous contacts abroad in the field of teaching and research. Guest lecturers from international universities regularly teach at the Professorship, and visits to international art exhibitions (e.g. the Biennale di Venezia) as well as field trips to international museums, galleries and studios enrich the program. Courses offered in English invite international students to study Art Education at the KU. The Art Education team gives presentations and talks at international conferences and also teaches at universities abroad.

The KU maintains a partnership network with around 300 universities worldwide. The KU International Office supports students in the planning phase and provides information on different financing possibilities for stays abroad.

Practical connection

At the Professorship of Art Education and Didactics of Art, the concept "Thinking and Learning with Images" opens up the real and digital space of images. Here, the concept of images is meant in a comprehensive sense and includes both images of the surface and pictorial works in space. The examination of such a comprehensive visual world that also consists of hybrid images, the production of which connects different forms of design, aims to produce, reflect and learn to understand images. The mediation in the communication space of art takes art history into account and refers back to the entire time window of artistic creation up to current positions in art. High art and the aesthetics of everyday life form the areas of action of the communication of art. "Commuting" between the visual worlds is a premise and distinguishes a contemporary and sustainable communication of art in all fields of art education.

The Interdisciplinary Bachelor's degree program provides for an internship at a private or public institution, which brings students into contact with possible professional fields at an early stage. Students also have the possibility to complete their internship abroad; for individual advice and support in finding an internship and financing possibilities, the KU Career Service and the International Internship Service are happy to help.

Career possibilities and professional fields

Career prospects

With this Bachelor's degree program, students qualify for fields of activity in various art educational spheres of activity, in which art production and art reflection are initiated, implemented and also accompanied scientifically. Through the unique cooperation with the Bayerische Museumsakademie, students are given the opportunity to develop the exemplary art educational sphere of action "museum" as a space for experience and learning and as a complementary learning environment, and to gain essential insights into different professional fields of museum work and cultural management. Together with renowned representatives of the cultural sector, students develop concepts for mediation formats of the Bayerische Museumsakademie during their course of studies.

The degree program enables students to teach art and culture in a contemporary and sustainable way in many extracurricular learning environments of aesthetic education (e.g. museums, youth and adult education institutions), to develop and implement art education programs in the context of lifelong learning, taking into account diversity, heterogeneity and inclusion, and to provide art-related support for therapy and rehabilitation programs.

"Art Education was one of my two main subjects for Teaching at Secondary Schools. From the very beginning, I appreciated the good balance between theory and practice as well as the great, appreciative support from the lecturers. I found the opportunity to unfold and develop my own artistic personality (further) in addition to the content on the didactics of art imparted in the teacher training program particularly enriching. The KU offers numerous practical art events and excellently equipped workshops and studios. For this reason, I decided to deepen my theoretical knowledge and practical skills in an ensuing Master’s program and doctoral program.”

"Individual support is probably always something worth striving for, but I dare say that it can have the greatest effect in the arts. When I started my studies of Art Education at the KU, I could draw quite well, I had heard of Schiele and Renoir and friends and family thought it was a good idea to live out my "creative streak". At that time, I would never have believed it was possible that I would take my own individual direction, not only artistically, but especially in art education. In my four years of study I was not only supported in all my ideas – no matter how absurd – they were taken seriously, discussed, criticized and appreciated in order to carve out my own artistic fingerprint. I was not only provided with insights into art educational disciplines ranging from museum mediation, dance interventions to creativity research, but I was also given the chance to actively participate in shaping these insights and take responsibility, thus paving my own way into the world of art mediation. Here, I was able to truly experience the effect that individual support in the arts can have."
