Classical Philology (Greek Studies) at the KU is offered in cooperation with the University of Bamberg. The first phase of the course, up to Bachelor's level, is taught at the KU. After that, students of the subject transfer to Bamberg. The course includes the scientific study of:
Greek Literary Studies
Classical philology is the study of Ancient Greek and Roman texts from the beginnings of Western literature to works from Late Antiquity. Teaching and research at the KU in Classical Philology covers all areas of the discipline and focuses on the Archaic period (Homer, lyric poetry) and imperial literature (especially Plutarch). Students are taught methods and approaches from both literary and cultural studies. In addition, the course includes interdisciplinary connections to other disciplines of classical studies (Ancient History in Classical Archaeology and Ancient Church History) and to modern Literary Studies.
Greek Linguistics
The linguistics part of the program comprises three aspects: In addition to linguistic analysis and historical linguistics, great importance is placed on students being able to actively use the language.
Subject Didactics
Subject didactics of ancient languages at the KU Eichstätt-Ingolstadt offers a professional supplement to the study program of Classical Philology for teaching degree students in theory and practice. Introductory courses for the subject Greek are offered in Eichstätt. Internships and specific preparation for the state examination are then completed in the second part of the course at the University of Bamberg.
In the first semesters, the focus is initially on courses that teach the basics of literary studies as well as subject-specific linguistic content. In the following semesters, these topics will be deepened: Literature and cultural studies will be practiced in various seminars and supplemented by lectures.
An essential part of the course is also translation exercises, in which the variety of Greek literature is taught supplementary to the seminars and lectures. A field trip is also part of the course, which will focus on the material remains of ancient cultures.
As a teacher training course concludes with the state examination, courses that specifically prepare students for this examination are offered in the final phase of the course. However, these courses are not offered at the KU, but in Bamberg.
You can find the program structure on the website of the Center for Teacher Education.
At the KU, the subject can be combined with the teaching degree for Gymnasium with Latin.
The KU has a University Library that not only lies in a very idyllic location, but is also very well equipped for the subject of Greek Studies. The campus in Eichstätt is also equipped with several PC pools of the Computer Center, and is home to the Language Center and Sports Center.
KU students and alumni have voted for their University to be Germany's most popular university in the 2024 ranking of the online portal StudyCheck. This is the third time in a row, as KU was also voted the most popular university in 2021 and 2022. The ranking was based on over 78,000 evaluations for more than 500 higher education institutions and universities. 97 percent of students questioned for the ranking would recommend studying at the KU to others.
"There is no better praise for a university than almost 100 percent of students and alumni agreeing: I can only recommend studying at the KU! That is why we are very pleased with the ranking’s outcome, because it expresses the high level of satisfaction of our students," says KU President Prof. Dr. Gabriele Gien.
Students of Classical Philology have the opportunity to spend three to twelve months at a partner university with ERASMUS+ after completing their first year of study (i.e. after the second semester) at the earliest.
The Classical Philology department maintains numerous partnerships with institutes and facilities at European universities, including in Greece, France, Italy and Spain. You can find all relevant details here.
