Counseling teachers are trained counselors who have qualified for counseling through a state examination. [...] The range of counseling services covers the entire educational process. At the intersection of school and home, it ranges from talks and information offers to pedagogical assistance to support and prevention.
The training of future counseling teachers at the KU Eichstätt-Ingolstadt takes into account in particular the requirements of inclusion and career orientation, to which the LPO I (in german) refers in various ways in Section 112.
A prerequisite for taking up the extension studies for the qualification as a counseling teacher is the simultaneous study of a teaching degree at KU. Undergraduate students are recommended to complete required areas of educational science studies in the teacher training program in advance.
The prerequisite for the subsequent extension is the Second State Examination for a teaching profession (elementary school or secondary school (Mittelschule, Realschule, Gymnasium), vocational school or special education).
The extension course is designed to provide the scientific foundations and basic knowledge as well as skills, competencies and attitudes that enable the counseling teacher to independently handle counseling tasks that arise in everyday school life.
In addition to psychological expertise, differentiated knowledge of school organization and the legal as well as sociological foundations are required.
• Psychological counseling and conversational skills
• Personality psychology and psychology of teaching and learning
• Behavioral problems, learning and performance difficulties
• Educational-psychological diagnostics
• Counseling case analysis
• Pedagogical basics of counseling in school
• Pedagogical support in case of learning difficulties, classroom disruptions and disabilities
• School career counseling
• Organizational counseling, inclusive school development, evaluation
Most of the modules are held in block courses to also give students, who complete the extension subsequently, the possibility to attend.
The module plans/program structure plans for each school type can be accessed on the website of the Center for Teacher Education (in German).
KU students and alumni have voted for their University to be Germany's most popular university in the 2024 ranking of the online portal StudyCheck. This is the third time in a row, as KU was also voted the most popular university in 2021 and 2022. The ranking was based on over 78,000 evaluations for more than 500 higher education institutions and universities. 97 percent of students questioned for the ranking would recommend studying at the KU to others.
"There is no better praise for a university than almost 100 percent of students and alumni agreeing: I can only recommend studying at the KU! That is why we are very pleased with the ranking’s outcome, because it expresses the high level of satisfaction of our students," says KU President Prof. Dr. Gabriele Gien.
Those who decide to study counseling should be interested in the pedagogical and psychological laws and interrelationships in the school context beyond the usual level and enjoy cooperative, solution-oriented work in the school system.
In addition to a high level of psychological resilience, the willingness to develop one's own personality, social skills, a humanistic and appreciative attitude, the ability to work in a team, confidentiality, and the ability to communicate, the ability to deal with conflicts and self-reflection ability are also required for working in counseling.
Through the intensive examination of their own personality, future guidance counselors should be able to act as stable, solution-oriented contact persons for students, teachers and parents – even in exceptional educational situations.
The KU has two campuses: Eichstätt and Ingolstadt. Seven faculties are located in Eichstätt. The Ingolstadt School of Management (WFI) and MIDS (Institute of Applied Mathematics, Machine Learning and Data Science) are located on our Ingolstadt campus.
