Erasmus+

The “Erasmus+ program is open to all KU students. Study places for the program are offered by universities within Europe. You can study at the partner universities for which the KU has concluded a valid agreement for your subject area. It is not possible to apply outside the subject area, i.e. students of political science apply through political science contracts, students of journalism apply through journalism contracts, etc.

You can see which universities you are eligible for under "General Information - Partner Universities".

General information

Meaning of Erasmus+

The Erasmus+ program means the following:

  • The exchange takes place through an agreement of your field of study at a partner university.
  • Due to the agreement you do not pay tuition at the partner university. However, other fees may apply.
  • You are still enrolled at KU during the semester abroad and must also pay the semester fee at KU.
  • Your achievements from abroad can be credited via a learning agreement. More information can be found under "Academic Recognition". Bachelor students must successfully complete at least 20 ECTS at the host university, Master students must successfully complete at least 15 ECTS at the host university. The proof is provided by the Transcript of Records, which you will receive from the host university.
  • You will receive Erasmus+ funding when all requirements are met. More information can be found under "Funding" on this page.

Funding

General information

To receive Erasmus+ funding, you must meet the following conditions:

  • Successful studies at the host university. Bachelor students must successfully complete at least 20 ECTS at the host university, Master students must sucessfully complete at least 15 ECTS at the host university. If you do not comply with this, you may have to pay back your funding completely.
  • Meet all deadlines set by both the KU International Office and the host university. This includes, but is not limited to, submitting all application materials by the deadline, submitting all grant agreement materials by the deadline, taking the OLS test, completing an EU Survey, etc. Those who do not meet the deadlines will be excluded from the procedure.
  • During your studies at the host university, you are subject to the local rules. This means if attendance is compulsory at the host university, you must comply with it. If the host university requires a higher number of minimum ECTS, this requirement is also mandatory for you.

Erasmus funding is calculated as follows:

  • The first installment (80% of the total funding amount) is calculated and disbursed following your arrival at the host university and after you have uploaded the document “Confirmation of Arrival”.
  • The second installment (20% of the total funding amount) is calculated and disbursed after conclusion of the mobility and after you have uploaded all required documents. Please consider this when planning your finances!
  • If not all requested documents are submitted at the end of the mobility, the total funding will be reclaimed.

Therefore, please consider the following questions early on:

  • How high are the costs of the stay in the host country?
  • What kind of additional funding is available?
  • Are there any other financing possibilities?

For an overview of possible scholarship programs, please click here.

Please note that Erasmus+ funding is intended as a financial supplement, not a full scholarship, and it does not cover all expenses.

Erasmus+ country groups Europe

In the context of the Erasmus+ program, you receive funding from the EU. The amount of funding depends on the duration of the mobility and the rates of the respective country group.

Please note: Depending on the budget commitment by the EU, it is possible that the funding will be calculated as a lump sum. A firm decision on this will not be made until summer 2024:

  • If you stay for one semester, you will be funded for three months according to the country group of your host country, regardless of the length of your stay.
  • If you stay for two semesters, you will be funded for six months according to the country group of your host country, regardless of the length of your stay.

Erasmus+ country group 1 - EUR 600.00 per month / daily rate EUR 20.00:
Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden.

Erasmus+ country group 2 - EUR 540.00 per month / daily rate EUR 18.00:
Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Greece, Latvia, Malta, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Bulgaria, Croatia, Hungary, Lithuania, North Macedonia, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Turkey.

Even though the UK is no longer part of the Erasmus+ area, students of English Studies can be funded for a stay of three months for the academic year 25/26 using the remaining funds from the 24/25 budget:

EUR 600.00 monthly / daily rate EUR 20.00.

Prerequisites:

  • TOEFL iBT with a minimum score of 95 points or Academic IELTS with a minimum score of 7 total points.

Top-up for participants with fewer opportunities

General information

In addition to the Erasmus+ grant, students can apply for a "Top-up for participants with fewer opportunities". The top-up is 250,00 Euro per month. Caveat: Top-ups for participants with fewer opportunities are not combinable with each other. This means, if you fulfil more than one of the following criteria, you can only receive a maximum amount of 250,00 Euro per month.

Top-up for First Time Academics

Students, of whom no legal guardian has achieved an academic degree (FH or university), may apply for this top-up. A master craftsman’s diploma is NOT classified as an academic degree in this context. Academic degrees achieved by a legal guardian abroad which are not recognised as such in Germany (e.g. physiotherapy), are, however, classified as academic degree. In case of single parents, this regulation applies only to the parent the child lives with.

Proof: Declaration of Honour of legal guardians (single parents: of the parent). You can find the template in your workflow.

Top-up for Employed Students

Students, who pursue employment with social insurance liability before the start of their mobility and who cannot continue with this employment during their stay abroad, are entitled to apply for this top-up. The terms are the following:

  • monthly income between 450 and 850 Euro (sum of the net earnings of all occupations)
  • min. 6 months of regular occupation before the mobility and since the application
  • resignation is no condition - the employment contract may also pause

Note: self-employed students and dual or extra-occupational degrees with fixed salary are unfortunately excluded from the application (the DAAD is currently discussing a rectification of this guideline).

Proof: payroll or tax declaration / tax assessment

Top-up for Students with Child(ren)

Students, who travel abroad with their child(ren) may apply for this top-up. The amount is independent of the number of children. With the application, you agree on submitting a proof that you are in charge of the child and that the child will be travelling with you. The additional funds may also be granted to pairs. However, a double funding of a child is not possible.

Note: Students with child(ren) may either apply for this top-up or for the compensation of the real costs. If applying for the latter, all real costs have to be proven with receipts. If you intend to apply for the compensation of the real costs, please contact the KU International Office before your mobility.

Proof: copy of birth certificate and travel tickets of your child.

Top-up for students with Disability (Degree of Disability of 20 or More) or Chronical Disease

Students with a degree of disability of 20 or more and students with a chronical disease which causes additional costs during their stay abroad, are entitled to apply for this top-up. When applying for this top-up, you have to upload a proof for your disability or chronical disease (e.g. medical confirmation or disability certificate).

Note: Students with a disability (degree of disability of 20 or more) or chronical disease may alternatively apply for the compensation of the real costs. In this case, all real costs need to be proven with receipts. If you would like to apply for the compensation of the real costs, please contact the KU International Office before the mobility.

Proof:

  • Chronical disease: medical confirmation which says that you will have to face additional costs due to your chronical disease. The type of disease or the amount of additional costs do not have to be specified.
  • Disability (degree of disability of 20 or more): copy of the disability certificate or medical confirmation.

Information on the funding of travel days

The green top-up program has been discontinued. Instead, all Erasmus+ students can receive funding for some travel days.

The new regulations are as follows:

  • Green travel: Up to a maximum of 6 travel days can be funded if all receipts are submitted.
  • Non-green travel: Up to a maximum of 2 travel days can be funded.

Documents needed:

  • If you are organizing your journey via a car pool, please use the template: Declaration for carpooling. If you organize a carpool, please keep this declaration for future reference, have it signed by the person traveling with you and submit it at the end of your mobility.
  • However, if you are traveling by train or other green means of transport, you do not need a declaration of honor. Instead, we ask you to present proof of the tickets at the end of your mobility. Please keep the tickets for future reference.
  • If you are traveling non-green, you will automatically receive up to two days of funding. No proof is required.

  • You register in the portal and upload all application documents within the application deadline. Applications received after the deadline and applications that are not complete by the deadline will be excluded from the process.

The selection and distribution of study places is carried out by the International Office. The following criteria will be taken into account:

  • The application must be formally in order.
  • Matching of subject of study and exchange agreement
  • Average grade of the applicant at the time of application
    • Bachelor students can apply from the 3rd semester onwards. The grade shown on the Transcript of Records at the time of application counts. Bachelor students in the third semester must have achieved at least 50 ECTS in their studies by then. Otherwise an application is not possible. Bachelor students in a higher semester must be able to prove an average of 25 ECTS per semester.
    • Master students can apply from the 1st semester. The grade of your Bachelor degree always counts; also for Master students in a higher semester.
  • Language skills
  • Optional: Proof of involvement in AK International or ESN.

Language requirements

General Information
  • Evidence of the language of study must always be provided. Example: If you want to study in Italy in English, you must prove sufficient knowledge of English. If you want to study in Italy in Italian, you must prove sufficient knowledge of Italian. Usually, proof of at least B2 is sufficient at the time of application. Some universities require proof of C1.
  • Proof of language proficiency must not be older than two years at the time of application.
  • Proof is possible via the Abitur (only for BA students) as well as other standardized test procedures (such as TOEFL, Cambridge Certificate, IELTS, etc.).
  • Some partner universities in France, Italy and Spain also require basic knowledge of the local language, such as Institut Catholique de Paris in France (French min. B2), Università di Catania in Italy (Italian min. A2).
  • If you are unsure whether your language certificate is valid, please contact outgoing(at)ku.de
Proof of language proficiency: English

You need a proof of English language skills on level at least B2.

Attention:

  • Some universities also require proof of TOEFL or English proficiency at C1 level in the Erasmus+ program.
  • Students of English Studies applying for Birmingham or Aberdeen must be able to prove a TOEFL iBT with at least 95 points or an academic IELTS with at least 7 total score when applying.
  • WFI students applying to Ben Gurion University must have a minimum TOEFL iBT score of 95 or a minimum Academic IELTS score of 7 when applying.

Proof of language proficiency: Romance languages (French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese)
  • You will need proof of language proficiency of at least B2 level. Please note: Some universities require that you submit proof of C1 proficiency.
  • You can provide proof by submitting your Abitur certificate or by other standardized testing procedures (e.g. DELF, DALF, DELE, DIPL, etc.)
  • More information is available at the Language Center’s website
  • If you are unsure whether your proof of language proficiency is valid and/or sufficient, please contact
Attention: Proof of language proficiency via the Abitur

Within the framework of ERASMUS study and ERASMUS+ internship, Bachelor students can obtain proof of language proficiency for level B2 based on their Abitur. This is possible for the languages English, French, Spanish and Italian, if all conditions are fulfilled and confirmed by the Abitur certificate:

  • The language was your 1st, 2nd or 3rd foreign language at the Gymnasium, and
  • you have continued the language up to the Abitur and have taken an examination (oral or written) in it, and
  • you have completed the language in the Abitur examination with at least the grade "still good" = 10 points.
  • Not sufficient is if you have learned the language in question as a late starting language (from the 10th grade).
  • If all these conditions are met, the Abitur certificate counts as proof of a language certificate for B2. However, it is important to note that the information on the Abitur certificate, especially if it indicates a language level of B2+/C1, is only indicative. These do not necessarily reflect the academic language level required for a C1 certificate.

  • Students who wish to prove their knowledge at C1 level must therefore take an official language test. Recommended tests for this are the TOEFL iBT or the Academic IELTS. These tests are internationally recognized and provide a precise and reliable assessment of your language skills at an academic level.
